Connection Assessments

Introduction - Connection Assessment and Approval

In accordance with the Market Rules, Chapter 4, Section 6, anyone planning to construct a new or modified connection to the IESO-controlled grid is required to apply to the IESO for inclusion in the Connection Assessment and Approval (CAA) process.

The Connection Assessment and Approval process allows the IESO to assess the impact of new or modified connections on the reliability of the integrated power system. A connection applicant does not have to be a Market Participant in order to apply for Connection Assessment and Approval; however, the required participant authorization and facility registration processes must be completed prior to participation in the IESO-administered markets.

Obtaining an Assessment or Approval provides an overview of the connection process, from submitting an application through to gaining approval. It includes the relevant forms and procedures.  The Hydro One Connection Impact Assessment application and the IESO System Impact Assessment application form for generation facilities have been combined to improve the connection assessment process.

The Connection Assessment and Approval process requires the IESO to assess all proposals for connection to the IESO-controlled grid. In accordance with the CAA procedures, those projects that are not expected to have a significant impact on the IESO-controlled grid are only required to undergo an Expedited System Impact Assessment.
