What is Earth Hour?

Millions of Canadians will turn off their lights on Saturday March 27, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. for Earth Hour to show their support for taking action on climate change.

Earth Hour is an international event created by WWF with the goal of getting as many individuals and businesses as possible to turn off their lights for one hour. Turning off lights for an hour won’t stop climate change but it demonstrates that people are willing to take personal action and that those small actions can make a big difference.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) will participate in two ways during Earth Hour. Lights will be turned off at the IESO’s two facilities and the control centre will monitor Ontario’s electricity savings during Earth Hour. By comparing actual electricity demand against the typical demand for a Saturday night in March, the IESO can confirm that individual actions have an impact. The IESO observed a significant drop in electricity demand during Earth Hour in 2008 and 2009.

Don’t stop at turning off the lights. Earth Hour gives consumers a chance to think about what else can be done to reduce electricity use. Visit Energy Tips to learn more.
